What is direct air capture?

Carbon Capture and Storage is a method aimed at mitigating carbon emissions by capturing the carbon dioxide and securely storing it underground, preventing its contribution to climate change, or utilizing it to new objects. This process can be applied to capture CO2 from significant emission sources or directly from the atmosphere. We are creating a particular form of carbon capture called Direct Air Capture (DAC) where it is possible to collect CO2 directly from the atmosphere to reduce the CO2 that we are experiencing in the atmosphere right now as well as addressing the historical CO2 emissions already present in the atmosphere.

Direct Air Capture is thus a technology capable of extracting CO2 directly from the atmosphere at any location. The captured CO2 can either be subsequently stored in deep geological formations or utilized for various purposes.

One of the primary benefits with DAC compared to other Carbon Capture technologies is that it can be implemented nearly anywhere on Earth. Since the technology solely captures carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the only prerequisite is access to air. This flexibility allows for closeness to renewable energy sources and the desired storage location. Consequently, it minimizes the need for extensive transportation, enhancing the overall efficiency of the process.

Technology

The Korall carbon capture system is a novel liquid direct air carbon capture (DAC) technology. Our process involves filtering atmospheric air through a liquid solution composed of a solvent and a binding agent. Through a chemical reaction, the CO₂ in the air reacts with the binding agent to form a solid, carbon-containing compound.

This solid is insoluble in Korall’s chosen solvent making it easy to separate. Our solid is chemically stable and can be converted back into a pure stream of gaseous CO₂ for utilization or permanent storage.

KORALL´s Role in the DAC Value Chain

At Korall, we make carbon removal simple and reliable for our partners. We engineer, build, and commission each DAC facility, so you can focus on your core business while we ensure the system performs at its best. Once operational, we provide a technology licence paired with a service agreement, giving you continuous access to our expertise, smooth operations, and peace of mind that your climate goals are being met.
